Parabilis Receives NASA Award to Further Develop an Innovative Acoustic Fluid Management Device

Parabilis Space Technologies, Inc. of San Marcos, CA announced today that it recently received an award from NASA to further develop its innovative Acoustic Fluid Management Device (AFMD).  The device will be capable of liquid gas and fluid phase separation in propellant tanks using sound waves.  Such separation is critical to ensure that pneumatic pressurant gas can be vented free of valuable liquid propellant during in-space refueling operations.

Vice President of Engineering Chris Grainger stated: “This device will provide a mechanism to avoid inadvertent liquid propellant venting during refueling operations and can also provide a precise measurement of propellant (and 3D knowledge of gas ullage in a tank), which is critical for spacecraft operators.”

In this next phase Parabilis will fabricate test articles, perform tests to validate the fundamental technology, and design a flight device. This work will position AFMD for rapid adaptation into spacecraft systems and commercialization of the device.

“This win affirms our position as a leading provider of refuelable propellant system solutions,” said Rico Attanasio, CEO for Parabilis, “Large and small spacecraft manufacturers, satellite operators, and refueling service providers will benefit from this novel device.  We’re excited to add the development and testing of AFMD alongside our ongoing work of integrating and qualifying the refuelable propulsion subsystem for Astroscale’s life extension (LEXI) commercial spacecraft, and the refueling subsystem for Astroscale’s Prototype Servicer for Refueling (APS-R) spacecraft for the United States Space Force.”

As a non-traditional partner to both government and commercial customers, Parabilis offers rapid, reliable, and innovative propulsion technologies—backed by a world-class team and proven flight and test heritage. Parabilis is a global leader in hybrid solid-liquid rocket motors and are shaping the next era of responsive space operations.  With in-house design, development, and testing (including our dedicated propulsion test site in Ramona, CA), Parabilis delivers the performance and agility today’s missions demand.
